How To Make Yourself The De Facto Leader On Any Project

How to make yourself the de facto leader on any project This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. Top 10 Posts on Categories Just because you are not the manager of the department, project manager on a project or team leader on a team doesn’t mean you can’t be the leader. Leadership isn’t about your title or label, it is about what you do in the workplace. If you want to lead, here are five steps to get you there. Basics matter. If you can’t deliver your work on time or do quality work, there is no way for you to lead. Leading is about doing and leadership by example is one way to show leadership. Doing your work on time also means your team can rely on you to do your part â€" they don’t have to cover for your failings. Doing your work is the baseline for leadership. If you don’t do the work, you won’t get to lead. This includes group meetings, team meetings, meetings with your manager and meetings with your individual team members. If it’s scheduled, be prepared. Being prepared means having your part done for what you are to present. It means having thought through the agenda so you can offer constructive input to the issues or solutions being proposed. It means having data to back up your position so that it isn’t just your opinion about what is on the table. Most people walk into all sorts of meetings, including the meeting leaders, not ready for prime time. Being prepared gives you significant influence on the outcome because you can offer solutions, people will grab onto and modify those solutions and work will get done. If an issue is coming to a decision, it is critical that you know everyone’s position on the issue. Knowing the position before the decision is made helps you understand where the power is for the decision and where the objections are for the issue. This means you need to talk with each person about where they stand on the decision in question and ask pertinent questions about their position. This includes “what if” questions like “If we did it your way and then added on these two things, what would you think of that?” By asking questions, you can tell where there is room for a better solution overall â€" or where the objections will kill a decision. By knowing the positions, you can provide a synthesized solution that matches the majority while accommodating those with objections. Or you can take where people are at and work out a new solution that is better than what is proposed, building on what is said in the meeting. Or you can be in a position to just be quiet while two sides blow up the whole thing and you can be in a position to help put it back together in a different way that helps everyone. But if you don’t know everyone’s position on an issue, you can’t get into a position to lead. How often have you gone into a project meeting and no one has an agenda for the meeting? My rule is this: he who has the agenda gets 80% of what they want out of a meeting. So walking into every meeting with an agenda â€" what needs to be accomplished from the meeting and here is your solution â€" should be part of every meeting preparation. Plus, if you ask about the agenda before the decision meeting is held, you can offer constructive criticism about the agenda â€" what to include, what to add, and what to take out. You won’t get everything you want â€" but you’ll get most of it because you offered an agenda and a way for people to constructively handle their time. Behind the scenes, offering constructive suggestions about the project to the decision-maker and influencers on the project draws you closer to a having a place at the decision table. The reason is simple: most of your coworkers haven’t thought through the issues well enough to know the constructive solutions to problems. Managers and leaders want solutions to problems. Perhaps your entire suggestion won’t be the final answer; that’s OK. But if your suggestion starts the dialogue to get to a final solution, and you continue to add constructive suggestions along the way, you will be seen as a thought leader on the subject and getting results. Most of your coworkers sit back and wait for whoever has the title of “leader” to make a decision. They think leaders do that without any input. They don’t do the work to figure out the best way of accomplishing the project’s goals. They simply wait to be told what to do for their part of the project and then whine about the work that needs doing. Cubicle Warriors don’t shy away from the work and use their business judgment to get the project to a successful conclusion. Along the way, they make the project better because they engage with the work by getting ready, preparing, and working behind the scenes to get the best solution for the business. Are you ready to be the de facto leader on your next project? […] need to prove your worth to your manager and team every day. Why Youre Good Enough, Smart Enough, and Goshdarnit - People Like You!

Why Youre Good Enough, Smart Enough, and Goshdarnit - People Like You! Watch Me Explored by ivan amezcua and found by means of kind over issue Im as of now spending the majority of my late spring working with 8 unique gatherings (I call them Operations!, since its funner), one of which is Operation: Career Actions Activated! This gathering is contained peeps who realize what they wanna do when they grow up, however need to make sense of how to get it going in the similarity to their genuine, consistently life. Meg M. Ryan is in this gathering, and when she composed a letter to her Vampire (that is the voice we as a whole have in our minds that sucks the great stuff outta us) to clarify why she was adequate, sufficiently brilliant, and goshdarnit! individuals enjoyed her enough to make her profession dreams conceivable, I kicked the bucket of amazeballsness. Fortunately she consented to let me post it here, so you would all be able to bite the dust of amazeballsness as well. Dont stress biting the dust of amazeballsness is a decent approach. Dear Mr. Vampire, I am adequate, savvy enough, and goshdarnit enough individuals like me to make my profession prosper in light of the fact that. Indeed, my dear parasitic pimp, it just happens to me that YOU ARE ASKING THE WRONG QUESTION, and you are most likely doing it just to attempt to THROW ME FOR A LOOP. (That irritates me a bit, V., and you will catch wind of that later.) The genuine inquiry you ought to present is WHY ISN'T EVERYONE doing what they love, that makes them prosper and improves the world a spot? Ohhhh, right! Since then vampires like you would have no place to go, no place to tap a scrumptious draft of that vintage you love so much that is FERMENTED BY FEAR. Not cool, V. Not cool. Presently, this is presumably an all out adage, however, when you state poop like this to me: Who do you think you are to attempt to make a vocation out of 'spreading the good news of music'? There are a huge number of individuals everywhere throughout the world with much more squeezing issues than whether they play music, and many (if not most, if not by far most) make their living sitting in a desk area, working at Target, cleaning toilets â€" for $15 an hour or less! What makes you any superior to them? I would need to state something like this back: All things considered, Vampy, who do I think I am NOT to? You paint an entirely revolting picture there: work area occupants, the lowest pay permitted by law workers. It is safe to say that you are recommending I go along with them? Is the objective for everybody on the planet to be a ruined, misused, non-unionized specialist? Attempt once more, buddy. And afterward you'd state something like, No, no, I'm trying to say you ought to accomplish something that is WORTH something! Be a specialist or an attorney, or what wasn't right with that PR work you had? That PAID WELL, and it was with a RESPECTABLE organization. You're simply MESSING AROUND doing this stuff. What's more, to that I would stateâ€"delicately, in the wake of venturing into the other roomâ€"Oww. Then I'd return out and state, Well, V., I realize that back when you were my age a few hundred years prior, professions worked in an unexpected way. Those troubadours and chemists were an entirely nutty bundle, and I can see how you wouldn't need me going around iwth their kind. Be that as it may, things are distinctive at this point. Since we've spent the previous 50 to 100 years distancing ourselves from the things in life that bring us profound, passionate, and physical prosperity, we need individuals who carry bliss into the world like never before. Furthermore, I am JOYFUL, KNOWLEDGABLE, and ATTUNED to that soupy, chaotic stuff that makes life, well, ALIVE. Also, I'm sorted out and venturesome for sure. So I don't need to be a legal advisor or an educator or a marketing specialist to OFFER VALUABLE SERVICES and GET PAID WELL FOR IT. Goodness, and furthermore, having a great time in life isn't MESSING AROUND. That is the thing that I would state. And afterward, as you lurk off into the shadows, I would recollect how the entirety of the feelings of trepidation, questions, and hangups I've surrendered to or subdued or got into a knoc-down, drag-out fight with have given me a considerable lot of the qualities and awesomesauce I have today: self-restraint, obligation, the propensity to see material overstriving with a dubious eye, quite amazing qualifications, and a sound portion of lowliness â€" and even the experience of being a discouraged, came up short on, rudderless work space tenant. Thankfully, Meg **************************************************************

What does your brand say about you - Copeland Coaching

What does your brand say about you I dont know about you, but I was told that the person whos the most qualified and the hardest working gets the job. But, it turns out, at many companies, its just not. I first learned this lesson in graduate school. I attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Youve probably heard of it. Its beautiful. When I was studying for my MBA, I wanted to get an internship at The Gap. I assumed they would come to my school to interview students, but they didnt. They went to UCLA (UCLA is ranked higher). So, I posed as a UCLA student to land a job interview. It worked. While the UCLA students showed up in jeans and t-shirts, I arrived in a suit, with business cards and resumes. The Gap invited me to their corporate headquarters for meetings. But ultimately, they decided not to extend an internship. One of the reasons for the decision was, they have a specific list of schools they hire from. Pepperdine was not on that list. This sounds unlikely, but its true. I went to a prestigious undergraduate school. There were also employers who would only hire from a small list of elite schools. Back then, I never thought about how unfair this really was. And, I landed my first internship at General Motors without ever having an interview. I remember that my boss said to me, I didnt need to interview you. You go to RPI. I knew you would be good. Fast forward to today. I was listening to a podcast called Revisionist History, hosted by Malcom Gladwell. Mr. Gladwell has taken a deep dive into the world of law school. As the episode begins, the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is speaking to a group of law students. One student asked Mr. Scalia, …what do smart, hardworking students need to do to be outrageously successful in the law? Mr. Scalia answered, …I cant afford a miss. I just cant. So, Im going to be picking from the law schools that basically are the hardest to get into. They admit the best and the brightest. And, they may not teach very well. But, you cant make a sows ear out of a silk purse. If they come in the best and the brightest, theyre probably going to leave the best and the brightest. Mr. Scalia went to Harvard. Hes saying that he hires from the very top law schools. Anyone who didnt go to one of those schools, he wont consider. And it turns out, very often, companies hire in the same way. If they dont recognize your school or your past employers, it may not matter how qualified you are. This method takes the burden off of employers to truly determine what makes someone the best. And, it means that the name brands on your resume could matter more than the experience that sits behind them. I hope these tips have helped you. How To Be An Effective Communicator

Instructions to Be An Effective Communicator Fifteen years and in any event two professions back, I was in the cafeteria of a colossal distribution center for one of this countrys biggest retailers. They had various little screens spread around, communicating messages of motivation and motivation.I detest stuff that way. One specific one drew me up tall and got my pants in a bunch:How you state something is a higher priority than what you say.Like hellfire it is, I snorted.Fifteen years after the fact I can certainly say, You wager it is.If you need individuals to get you or you need to be valued, in the event that you want to influence or impact somebody, or on the off chance that you want to make an association that is more than simply value-based, at that point how you state something at the end of the day, conveying successfully is totally at any rate as significant as what you state. Any incredible communicator who has a decent comprehension of the correspondence procedure realizes how to express what is on her mind and wi ll likewise manufacture more grounded, progressively useful relationships. But how would you impart viably? Great correspondence may not be your solid suit, yet fortunately regardless of whether you dont feel like a characteristic at relational correspondence, there are abilities you can ace (counting non-verbal communication and non-verbal relational abilities) that will guarantee that youre drawing in your listener(s):1. Pose Inquiries of Curiosity, Not ValidationYou know when somebody utilizes an inquiry as a stunt or gadget to refute you? Dont do it. Its alright to burrow further, however do it in light of the fact that youre really inspired by what they need to state or in tuning in to the next perspective; dont just do it to play gotcha. Ask an open-finished inquiry to flag that youre really keen on whomever youre speaking with.2. Tune in With Your EyesI now and again experience the ill effects of MEGO (my gaze goes out into the distance). On the off chance that you need to be a powerful communicator, exhibit that you give it a second thought and that youre tuning in by looking and by giving somebody your complete consideration. Great correspondence is a two-way road that includes a ton of nonverbal correspondence. That implies utilizing physical prompts to impart your point just as verbal ones.3. Dont Speak Like a RobotMechanical objects ramble, human bores ramble endlessly and on. Monotones put individuals to bed, so punch up your remarks by differing pitch and your manner of speaking. Show that youre certain (a significant nature of correspondence) by talking unmistakably while utilizing a drawing in tone.4. Slow Down! Most individuals talk so rapidly that your ears are two sentences behind. One key to being a decent communicator is recalling that there is no race with time as the opponent, and talking so quickly that nobody can follow ensures your crowd will block you out before youre past the third stop sign in that sentence.5. No Need to ShoutPassion and energy are incredible, yet the decibel level wont make individuals comfortable up to hear what you need to say.6. Talk in Clear and Concise SentencesPause between contemplations so the audience can assimilate every one of your thoughts, and perhaps sneak in an idea or open-finished inquiry of their own.7. Incredible Conversation Is Like a Beach BallYou talk and pass the twirly doo to them; they remark and pass it back. Consider discourse a common dislike a lecture.8. SmileSounds fundamental, however not exclusively would it be able to motion toward the other individual that you like what theyre saying, it additionally loosens up your face. A great deal of inadequate correspondence results from a confounded outward appearance or non-verbal communication. Be aware of your outward appearance both while youre talking and keeping in mind that youre listening.9. Maintain a strategic distance from JargonThose extravagant jeans SAT words can turn individuals off, other than guaranteein g that nobody will comprehend anything youre saying. To keep away from incapable correspondences, utilize clear and brief words that vibe common to you.10. Remember Everyone for the ConversationIf youre in a gathering, help the loners feel like piece of the group by including them as well. Not exclusively will you be pegged as an incredible communicator, youll gain their undying appreciation for being so benevolent. Youre likewise showing compassion and open-mindedness.11. Curtness is BestLess is more in both present day engineering and viable correspondences. In the event that you continue babbling the main thing youve achieved is suffocating your message and overcoming your audience members sleep deprivation.- - Nancy Halpern is an official mentor with a demonstrated reputation in helping senior pioneers and their groups arrive at their maximum capacity. How Employee Engagement Jumpstarts Employee Advocacy

How Employee Engagement Jumpstarts Employee Advocacy Employee engagement or employee advocacy? Why not both I say! It appears engaged employees are very happy to be social media advocates of your corporate and/or employer brand. The challenge for marketers Marketing and communications teams are pulling out all the stops to motivate employees to advocate for the brand on social media, but are still struggling to get them to read the content, let alone share it. Whens the last time you read something interesting on your companys  intranet? And if you did find something worth sharing, how would you when its an internal page? What’s keeping employees from advocating for their brand? To start, they don’t know what’s safe to share and what isn’t. An  employee advocacy program  could remedy this, by automating the process of discovering, consuming and distributing content. Employee engagement and advocacy stats: 93% of employees say they would be good advocates for the brand 87% of employees see the career benefits from professional sharing 94% of employees want to hear more about what is going on from leadership 86% of employees would feel more engaged if they knew more about what was going on 68% of executives say the do a VERY GOOD job at communicating but only 21% of employees agree 82% of millennials want to receive company information via a mobile app. In this graphic from our our friends at Social Chorus we  learn how engaging employees with brand and industry content will strengthen their connection to the brand and motivate them to share. Maintaining a Pure and Simple Home and Family Resume

Maintaining a Pure and Simple Home and Family ResumeIf you are looking for a great place to get some free, quality advice on how to write a good home and family resume, then look no further. I'm going to show you exactly what you need to know about the family section of your paper in order to help you dominate that part of your application. You can never have too much advice when it comes to a certain area of your life, because just like people's opinions about your profession, people's opinions about your personal life is just as important as your professional life. There are countless of ways to go about obtaining some solid advice, but this article focuses on the family section of your home and family resume. Since so many employers look for this section, it's important that you know how to write it properly in order to get your foot in the door. You may be thinking that this family section of your paper is nothing more than a list of accomplishments, but you would be wrong. Employe rs are looking for two things from you in your home and family resume: 1) that you lived together with your family; and 2) that you were married. Many employers will be more interested in your last spouse's resume, but you do not want to be left out in the cold with that kind of scrutiny on your record. You need to prepare your best personal statement, but this time you need to use the magic of a church resume. That's right - you need to add a list of accomplishments, like the good grades you received in school or church, volunteer work, community service projects, etc. This is how you get the attention of employers that the church-related activities won't get you. Plus, being a part of the church is a plus. But you don't have to be a sorority sisters to use this method. You can write a personal statement about the specific churches in your hometown that are close to you. Having your accomplishments written down will definitely help you stand out from the crowd, but you still need to stand out, which means that you should take care with the wording of your church resume. As with any resume, you need to avoid any possible dangers with your writing. If you're adding your school grades, then be sure to include all of them. Your school work doesn't have to look exactly like someone else's, but you should always put your best foot forward.Omitting something from your church resume will only hurt you. Not only will it hurt your chances at getting a job, but it also shows that you don't care about others. You should tell employers about every achievement that you have had in your life, regardless of how small or big the accomplishment may be. The employers want to know that you have succeeded at every endeavor that you've set out to do.It's not easy being your best self, but being honest and being open to the power of God is the miracle that will help you get the job of your dreams. It's not about what others think, it's about showing that you care. So get yourself a ch urch resume and be an amazing individual!

How to Get Amazing People In Your Life

How to Get Amazing People In Your Life Theres an ongoing debate about networking which will likely continue until you and I are both dead and gone. Look over the reader comments on any article or blog post about networking and youll see two distinctly different perspectives on the concept. The first camp says something along the lines of: Networking doesnt work! Its painful and its fruitless and I dont like going to networking events. I refuse to do it anymore. But dont take my word for itheres one such reply I saw last week on  this post  about an alternative approach to networking [spelling and grammar errors are his, not mine]: Yeah, right. When networking doesnt work (which is for roughly 95% of the people), networking advocates (otherwise known as asskissers) have a litany of excuses for why not. Youre not doing it right (whatever the right way is) Youre not doing it enough (which is to say, youre going to the bathroom without networking on the way). Youre not doing it with the right people (if I knew who the right people were, I wouldnt need to network. Networking is a phony strategy for phony people. But then theres the second group. They avoid traditional networking events, too, because they dont have much patience for a roomful of people tossing business cards around, each waiting for their turn to talk at you. An Alternative Approach to Networking For folks in this second group, networking means something entirely different. Theyre more concerned about making authentic connections with others who have shared interests and experiences. Sure, theres potential for helping each other and providing mutual benefit down the road, but thats not their primary objective. How This Will Help You Or Not Admittedly, this is not a short-term approach. Its a long-term process that requires a commitment to developing relationships. If you just took a sales position and need to meet this months aggressive quota, this will not help you get there. But regardless of your current profession, your geography, your future plansa year from now, youll wish youd adopted this approach a year ago. Julien Smith: Best Example Ever Ive been reviewing a variety of products on this topic lately, and the most concise and compelling illustration of this alternate perspective comes from Julien Smiths recent post, The Most Important Connections Ive Ever Made and How I Made Them. Its a superb illustration of this alternate perspective on networking. Its so superb that he doesnt even mention the word networking. In his post, Julien thanks and briefly profiles a number of people who  without question, are what helped me get where I am today. [He also states Im a lucky guy, which whenever I hear that from a multi-faceted, ambitious thought leader I cant help but think of the adage, The harder I work, the luckier I get.] Even though theres a Part II of his post that tells us how we can get amazing people in our life, too, I found its real value to be hidden in the patterns of his relationships. While reading the stories of how he met and connected with people like Chris Brogan, Seth Godin, and  Mitch Joel, I realized that his was a somewhat meandering path of connecting with people about cool stuff and shared interests at that moment in time. These amazing relationships were not born from a mission or a strategy to set up a network. They didnt begin because Julien was trying to get something down the road, banking on the law of reciprocity.    He saw them as amazing people and wanted to get to know them better. At the time, he had no idea what each of these connections could lead to, or who theyd lead him to. As I finished Part I of his post, I envisioned one of those neural-network brain photos. Better than it sounds, actually. So my point is this: theres  no quid pro quo. No guarantees that the connection you attempt to make will lead to anything besides the cup of coffee you suggest grabbing with them. And you have to be okay with that up front. What You Can Do With This You might see exactly what your next step is. Something you can do immediately thatll move you closer to the goal of adding amazing people to your life. If thats the case, great. Get out there. But if this is a little murky and you cant see clearly what step you could take today, heres a low-risk idea: think about your hobbies. Find a leader or amazing person in that arena and consider how you could connect with them. Geography is no longer a barrier, thanks to the internet. They could live in Australia, like that  amazing healthy-meals-in-minutes chick you admire.  How could you connect with her? What value can you offer? A successful connection or two in a safe arena will give you the confidence and creativity on how to connect with amazing people in other areas of your life. And, like Julien, you dont know where those connections will lead. Thats the fun part. Most Importantly Think about this from the perspective of that incessant interview question: Where do you see yourself in five years? What will your answer be? What will your ride from 2012 to 2017 look like? Do you know who will be on that ride with you? Some pretty amazing people. Image courtesy of Jenny Downing.

Why a USCD Resume Needs to Be Great

Why a USCD Resume Needs to Be GreatIf you are looking for a USCD professional, the number one question most people ask is 'How do I write a USCD resume?' For many, writing a USCD resume can be very difficult. Why? Because they don't know what to put in it, and they don't know how to make it stand out from the crowd. It is true that USCDs can be difficult, but there is no reason you should give up or not be able to get the right information when you need it. The only way to truly get the information you need when you need it is to have a well written USCD resume. The best way to do this is to ask an experienced USCD professional who has worked in this field for years.A professional can't sell you on the idea of writing a USCD resume. But, they can help you develop a good one that will get you a job interview and hire you as soon as possible. This is an extremely important part of any USCD career and it is necessary for everyone in the industry. You may ask, why would a USCD want to hire someone if they didn't get them a job interview? After all, you may be a USCD professional with many years of experience in the business. Why would anyone want to hire you if you don't have any job interviews lined up?One important thing to remember is that no one wants to hire someone just because they are a USCD professional. If they were, they would be hiring everyone who is in the field. If you want to get a job, you have to stand out from the other applicants.Career fairs are a great place to find out about these things. What you want to do is dress smartly, present yourself well, and ask about the company. Asking questions is the number one part of being well prepared for your career fair.It is also a good idea to carry your resume around. You never know who might run into you and talk to you. And, if you have a good resume and you are able to talk to them about what you do, they may remember you and look at you again for a job interview. So, don't let USCD career fairs make y ou feel like you are losing out. Keep on top of things, and you will be okay.

Avoiding Job Scams

Avoiding Job Scams Recently, I was dismayed to hear about the number of people getting roped into job scams. Sarah Needleman reported in the Wall Street Journal that There isnt always a job behind an online job posting.According to the article, sometimes employment ads are an underhanded way to get you to listen to a career marketing pitch or worse yet, an identity theft or money laundering scheme. With rising unemployment, the scammers are looking to take advantage of people in desperate situations. To avoid getting scammed, follow these tips noted in the article:Be suspicious if information is lacking. If the job posting does not list details on the hiring company or position, it might not be real. If a name is listed, try calling the company to make sure the job posting is legitimate. Dont share important information. On your resume, consider using a PO Box instead of your real address and a disposable email address. Check for complaints filed with the Better Business Bureau (www.BBB.org) against the hiring company or job placement agency noted in the employment ad.Still the best tride and true advice if you dont want to be the victim of a scam If it seems to good to be true, it probably is.Have you or someone you know been the victim of a job hunting scam? If youve experienced a job scam or successfully avoided one, share your story in the comments below. It will help us all stay informed and protected!

Resume Optimization Advice From the Experts

Resume Optimization Advice From the Experts I recently attended the  National Resume Writers Association  annual conference in San Diego and had the pleasure of hearing Paul Forster, Co-Founder and CEO of  Indeed.com  speak. Paul offered some excellent tips for resume optimization that can help job seekers increase the chances that they will be found on a job board. Here are my favorites:Use full and abbreviated words in your resume.  For example, a CFO should include both CFO and Chief Financial Officer in the body of the document. A candidate in the pharmaceuticals industry should use both pharmaceuticals and pharma to describe their industry.Stem keywords and vary your word choices.  For example, rather than just using the word analyst on your resume, include variants such as analysis or financial analyst as well.  Use a text only version of your resume for online posting. Many companies use parsing technology to locate the information they need on a resume. Heavily formatted Word  documents may be compromised or unreadabl e when uploaded into their databases.  Save a copy of your resume as an ASCII, plain text document to maximize the chances of having your document read.Refresh your resume. Recent, fresh resumes appear higher in the database cue. By changing something on the resume you have uploaded to a job board, you increase your chances of being found online. Be careful not to use this technique too frequently or your resume could be perceived as spam.Dont compromise the reader. While it is important to optimize the resume, it must be done in a way that it still makes sense to the human reader. Be sure to balance the needs of the human reader with search engine optimization techniques to create the best results. Weave word variations into your document in a logical and natural way.

Questionnaire For Writing a Resume - Your First Job

Questionnaire For Writing a Resume - Your First JobIf you are writing a questionnaire for writing a resume, do not ask 'What I want to do with my future', it's not the goal of a questionnaire for writing a resume. It can be a waste of time. Try to focus on an activity, set it as a challenge for yourself, and get started, not talk about anything else, which will make you more bored in the process. The questionnaire should start with a question 'What I want to do with my future', write down some objectives you wish to achieve, maybe even list them on your home page, all of your blog posts, or in your list of tasks to be accomplished. Then, the first part of the questionnaire should be to answer how you intend to achieve these objectives. Write out as much information about these objectives as you can, there are a lot of elements, so do not be hard on yourself if you cannot fit in all the information, but you have to have some sort of start. The next step of the questionnaire should then be to list all the projects that you can mention, all of them, even if you only have a sliver of what you need and write a short paragraph for each project. But remember to focus more on the work and less on the goal. You can write on the end of the project, but make sure that it's only part of your resume and that it doesn't put down the accomplishment, since this can mislead the reader about the real idea of your resume. After the projects, list a summary and thank you, the last step of the questionnaire should be a bullet point about what is to be said in the resume, which you want to say. I always like to write more on this paragraph, since I believe that I can only talk about the essentials, but at the same time I'm also trying to hide any flaws, and I still have time to edit later. Once I am done, I put the 'Read more' area, and then I make sure that I have added a link to my home page, if I need to. Any comments can be put into the 'Further reading' section. The last part of th e questionnaire for writing a resume is to conclude with the beginning. Tell them what you want them to see, what you like to see in your resume, and what you like to make sure you have at the end of your work. This part should be the most direct part, since you have to tell them what you like, what you don't like, and your aspirations. The reason I like to tell them this directly is because it gives you more information to work with, and you want to provide the reader with your expectations, not their expectations.Be sure to ask yourself some questions while you are writing the questionnaire for writing a resume. Is the questionnaire for writing a resume only going to be 5 questions? Or is it going to be 10 questions? If the questionnaire is only going to be 5 questions, try to do it faster, but if it's going to be 10 questions, you have to write an even longer article and make sure that you use your native language.A questionnaire for writing a resume can be difficult to read, but it is important to keep in mind that you have to be patient. It is part of the job of the resume writer to provide the reader with just enough information, without using too much, because that will make the resume dry and boring. Remember that the questionnaire for writing a resume is an activity that you can do alone, in the comfort of your own home, with the power of your own creativity, and a few minutes, so don't worry about trying to write a great first draft of a resume.

Are Robo-Advisors Worth It A Complete Guide - Money Under 30

Are Robo-Advisors Worth It A Complete Guide - Money Under 30 Are Robo-Advisors Worth It? A Complete Guide Robo-advisors like Betterment and Wealthfront have been exploding in the past two years.  In November of 2015, Betterment announced that they had surpassed $3 billion in assets under management. Wealthfront is not too far behind with $2.6 billion. Investment services like these offer convenience and expertise for a fraction of the cost of a financial advisor. While significantly cheaper than a flesh-and-blood financial advisor, robo-advisors arent free.  Fees for Betterment are .25 percent for all balances under $2 million (no additional fees if your balance goes over $2 million); Wealthfront manages your first $10,000 free, and its  fees start at .25 percent once youve accumulated at least $10,001, then drops to .15 percent when your balance reaches $1000,000. But, it should be noted that Wealthfront offers completely free financial planning that can help you plan for retirement, college expenses, home buying, and more. How to understand investment fees When comparing the cost of a mutual fund or ETF, you need to look at the expense ratio. The expense ratio is the percentage fee the fund charges to  pay for its management. Actively managed funds (ones that have a person running it) are the most costly. Index funds are passively managed and  cost much less. Target-date funds A type of index fund is a  target-date fund, which aims for your planned date of retirement, shifting investments as you get older. This would be a very simple way for you to set it and forget it when investing for retirement. Pick a date that youll expect to retire, and put all your money in that fund. According to Morningstar, the average expense ratio of target date funds is around 0.78 percent. So for every $100,000 you have invested in the fund, youll pay $780 in fees. But thats the average target-date fund.  A Vanguard target-date fund could cost as little as 0.14 percent. Thats like getting 82 percent off! ETFs But what if you dont want to use a target-date fund? What if you want a little more freedom and flexibility? At Vanguard, you can pick up well-diversified exchange-traded funds (like the Total Stock Market ETF) for as little as .05 percent. ETFs are a newish innovation, and are similar to mutual funds, only theyre traded on the exchange (hence the name) like stocks. This makes them more versatile and liquid than a mutual fund. Thats unquestionably cheap. But  which ones do you want, and how much of your money should you put into each? Thats the going-it-alone dilemma. How to calculate robo-advisor fees First of all, when using a robo-advisor youll still have to pay the expense ratio of the funds youre invested in. Theres no way around that. On top of that, youll pay a fee to the robo-investor for doing the work for you. Theyll choose your funds and rebalance them as necessary. Now lets look at what this could actually cost you in the long run. Are robo-advisors worth it? To give you a sense of the way these different fees add up over the years, we ran a test. Here are our assumptions: Youre saving $5,500 per year in an IRA (or about $458 per month). You get an  average annual return of 5 percent. Youre 25 years old. This gives you about 40 years until retirement age. With regard to fees, Im going to use 0.25 percent as the fee for a robo-advisor, as thats the median fee across both Betterment and Wealthfront. For a full list of robo-advisors that weve reviewed, go here. To estimate the cost of a financial advisor, Ill use our estimate  of 2 percent of total managed asset value. Here are a few other notes and assumptions of the chart below: The first column (Portfolio Value*) is the estimated value as if you paid no fees and got a 5  percent  annual return The rest of the columns are what that same portfolio would look like if you invested using each of the 4 methods (an index fund, a target-date fund, Betterment, or a financial advisor) The number in parentheses is the dollar amount youd lose to fees (from the original no-fee portfolio) up to that point in time (so the portfolio value shown is the value after fees) The estimated fees for the index fund and target-date fund portfolios were 0.05 percent and 0.14 percent, respectively, per the Vanguard estimates I noted above These figures dont account for inflation or any other external factors Now that Ive cleared up any questions you may have, heres a look at an example cost comparison using four different investment methods: YearsPortfolio Value*Index FundTarget Date FundRobo-advisorFinancial Advisor 531185$31,146 (-$39)$31,076 (-$109)$30,989 (-$196)$29,651 (-$1,534) 1070986$70,803 (-$183)$70,473 (-$513)$70,072 (-$914)$64,025 (-$6,961) 20186615$185,584 (-$1,031)$183,744 (-$2,871)$181,524 (-$5,091)$150,068 (-$36,547) 30374964$371,663 (-$3,301)$365,806 (-$9,158)$358,790 (-$16,174)$265,704 (-$109,260) 40681763$673,326 (-$8,437)$658,436 (-$23,327)$640,737 (-$41,026)$421,109 (-$260,654) So what do you notice? The first thing your eyes probably go to is the amount you could pay in fees over the course of 40 yearsover $260,000! Since Im sure you dont want to lose out on that kind of money, take a look at the other three. Obviously, if you assume the same return and the same contributions for each option, then the one that costs the least will also be the cheapest over the long term. However, target-date funds, robo-advisors, and financial advisors all claim to offer consumers a better deal: higher returns, less hassle, or both. Financial advisors, especially, claim that they can beat the market and get much higher returns. (Ninety percent of them miss their targets, however.) How have robo-advisor portfolios performed against target-date funds? Its impossible to say what return a hypothetical financial advisor would give you over the long term. We can, however, say what Betterment and a Vanguard target-date fund would have given you over the past five years. At their website, Betterment lets you explore the historical return of its portfolios, going back to 2004. If you select 90 percent stocks (which a 25-year-old should), and set your range from between June of 2011 and June of 2016, then the average annual return for your portfolio would be about 5.6 percent. Vanguards Target 2050 fund, which would be suitable for a 25-year-old from 2011, lists its average returns on the fund page. As of the end of the last quarter (i.e. the end of June), its average annual return over the past five years (i.e. the same period as the Betterment example) is almost two percentage points higher, at 7.56 percent. If you go back 10 years (and Betterments only been around since 2010), Vanguard still beats the Betterment portfolio, with an average annual return of 5.8 percent to Betterments 4.7 percent. Average annual returns over short periods of time can be misleading One thing to keep in mind, however, is that annual average return can vary drastically depending on your start date and end date. The SP 500, for instance, has an (inflation-adjusted) average annual return of 7  percent since its inception in 1928. But when an investor entered the market would seriously affect their returns. Those who entered in the late 60s, for instance, wouldnt have much of a return for years. One who put his money in in the 50s, however, would be doing great. Like so many things, timing is everything. This holds true for more recent years, as well. If you look at Betterments returns since July  of 2012, it shows an impressive 8.6 percent return. But the returns since January of 2013, just six months later? A respectable  5.8 percent. In those six months, the SP 500 increased more than 100 points, and would continue to go up for several more years. The later you came into the rally, the less it did for you. (This is why its so important not to panic sell after a market drop; you miss out on the inevitable rally.) Wealthfronts up front about the unpredictable nature of returns  but still estimate an annual pre-tax return of between 4 and 6 percent. Robo-advisors offer you convenience and peace of mind Robo-advisors take the work and worry out of the three most important elements of retirement planning: regular contributions, low fees, and a diversified portfolio Robo-advisors keep you diversified automatically At Money Under 30, we talk a lot about the importance of asset allocation. You want to separate your investments, keeping a certain amount in stocks (and different kinds of stocks), a certain amount in bonds, and possibly some even in cash. However, due to shifts in the market (i.e. stocks go up or down, or bonds go up or down), those amounts may get out of whack, and far away from where they should be to reduce risk. When that happens, you need to rebalance. Robo-advisors algorithms automatically rebalance your portfolio based on a number of different factors, like your age and the amount of time you have until you need the money. Robo-advisor websites make it easier to contribute to your account It doesnt matter what returns you get if you dont regularly put money away. Regular contributions are key to retirement success. Money Under 30 staff writer Lauren Barret likes Betterment for how easy it is to make additional contributions. With other brokers, I feel like its always a pain to figure out how to deposit more money into your account, and to pick where its going, she said. Their websites are very frustrating. With Betterment, its exceptionally easy. Its very consumer-oriented. When the market took a dive after Brexit, I was able to log in to my account and deposit  more money in just a few minutes. I didnt have to worry about where to put it. She  does, however, still have a rollover IRA with Vanguard. Their  fees are exceptionally low on my target-date fund and theyre still one of the best brokers out there. But I rarely deposit more money into this account, or move stuff around much, because its always a pain. I dread doing it. If a robo advisor can get you to put away more money than you would otherwise? Then its worth it. Robo advisors put your money in low-cost ETFs Betterment and Wealthfront almost exclusively invest your money in exchange-traded funds, which tend to be very cheap, with expense-ratios often under .10 percent. Summary While it may seem like Im pushing you toward trying a robo advisor, know that Im completely neutral. In fact, I invest the traditional way of choosing my own funds, but as I learn more about  the benefits to robo-advising, and as I have less and less time, I am changing my opinion a bit. Remember, Im not a financial advisor. But my ask of you is to consider all types of costs when you are deciding how to investspecifically the financial and time costs/savings of signing up with a robo advisor. If you dont know a thing about investing, and dont have time to learn, I dont suggest you try it on your own. Check out robo-advising. But if youre a savvy investor and have time to dedicate to in-depth research and frequent monitoring of your portfolio, a robo-advisor may not be for you.
